Since 2011, UnChained has empowered over 540 youth and prepared more than 230 shelter dogs for adoption, with a 92% adoption rate within 30 days of graduation.

CURRENT OPENINGS
— MENTAL HEALTH FACILITATOR (Part-Time)
Location: Salinas, CA (with some flexibility for remote/offsite work)
Hours: Approximately 5-8 hours per week
Start Date: As soon as possible (open until filled)
— About the Role
We’re seeking a thoughtful, trauma-informed Mental Health Facilitator to help guide and support youth in our program.
This role is ideal for someone who values connection, understands the power of the human-animal bond, and wants to create space for real growth — side by side with an inspiring team.
— What You’ll Do
Facilitate animal-assisted group activities and help ensure classroom safety
Build rapport and foster an environment where youth can reflect and grow
Lead Chat Circles and gentle group discussions around empathy, behavior, and learning from dogs
Support youth with practical skills — problem-solving, self-awareness, social/emotional learning
Collaborate with coaches and instructors to adapt sessions for diverse needs
Consult with staff and volunteers on trauma-informed care and best practices
Participate in team meetings to debrief, plan, and support overall wellbeing
Keep clear records of activities and youth progress; coordinate with other care providers as needed
— What We’re Looking For
Master’s degree in psychology, counseling, social work, or a related field
Current state license (if applicable)
Experience working with youth, especially those navigating foster care or juvenile justice systems
Familiarity with animal-assisted activities and/or the human-animal bond
Strong communication, empathy, and listening skills
Ability to work collaboratively with diverse staff, youth, and volunteers
Commitment to trauma-informed, non-judgmental support
Ability to create safe, inclusive, and welcoming group spaces

— PROGRAM DOG TRAINER (Part-Time)
Location: Monterey County Juvenile Hall (MCJH)—Salinas, CA
Hours: Part-time, program-based schedule
Start Date: As soon as possible (open until filled)
— About the Role
UnChained is seeking a skilled, compassionate Program Dog Trainer to lead our Canines Teaching Compassion program inside Monterey County Juvenile Hall).
This role is ideal for someone who has strong dog training expertise, values mentorship, and believes in the healing power of the human–animal bond. As a Program Dog Trainer, you’ll guide youth in learning positive reinforcement training methods while preparing program dogs for adoption.
— What You’ll Do
Lead and manage program sessions for youth and dogs at MCJH
Teach youth to train dogs in basic manners, skills, and care using positive reinforcement
Support youth’s social-emotional growth through lessons and structured discussions
Participate in the selection and evaluation of dogs for the program
Ensure safe handling of dogs on campus and support Health & Wellness lessons
Collaborate with staff, volunteers, and partner agencies to strengthen program impact
Maintain clear case notes and records of program activities and progress
Assist with closing ceremonies at the end of each training cycle
— What We’re Looking For
Minimum 2 years’ experience training dogs using positive reinforcement
Strong understanding of dog behavior, communication, and learning theory
Professional or personal experience caring for dogs, including health & wellness
Preferred: Experience working with shelter dogs, fearful/anxious dogs, and/or youth
Strong communication and teaching/training skills
Ability to multi-task — supporting both youth and dogs simultaneously
Collaborative spirit, with professionalism and reliability
Commitment to trauma-informed, compassionate practice
